San Juan del Rio is the second-largest city in the state of Querétaro in central México. It's en route to much of the north from Mexico City, and so was historically important.
Today, it has some colonial buildings for the tourist to see, but also three special attractions: the death museum, the Christmas museum, and the brewery.
The death museum was some sort of a church converted into a space about how Mexican culture deals with death. It's free to enter and only a bit of a walk from the bus terminal. Bonus points for having a good view of the city from afar too.
The Christmas museum has the idea that Christmas should be celebrated all year round, and by Christmas they mean quite the religious meaning of it. It's only $40 to enter, and it basically has different artisanal items showing the nativity scene.
The brewery you can take a minibus or a taxi to the industrial area for it. $120 for a 45-minute tour, 3 pints of beer, and you get to keep the beer glass! The factory is small but still interesting, and $120 for all of that is definitely worth it.
