Jalpan de Serra is a small city in the state of Querétaro in México. It contains 2 of the 5, including the first one, of the Franciscan missions that form a UNESCO heritage site.
The natives of the area were conquered by the Spaniards in the 1500s, but evangelical efforts failed until the 1700s because of heavy resistance.
Serra was the priest who built these missions, as well as those in California and Baja California.
It's around 4-5 hours by car, but 7-8 hours by bus (via San Juan del Río, Tequiquiapan, Bernal, etc) due to the multiple stops - the final destination for the bus in Xilitla in San Luis Potosí.
The city is pretty small, with a small historic centre with the mission, and the dam around 20 minutes away on foot being the main attraction. The second mission in Jalpan is not in the city but the municipality, which is only accessible by car/taxi.
